The Kilimanjaro hike is a journey you’ll never forget – you’re bound to see some of the most showstopping sights you’ll ever see, make a bunch of cool friends from across the globe, and earn a lifetime of bragging rights for summiting one of the tallest peaks in the world.
Though it isn’t a technical climb that requires you to be a certified mountaineer or gather a laundry list of complex gear, the Kilimanjaro hike requires you to keep a few things in mind, from physical training to handy tips for when you’re climbing.
Here are our top tips that will ensure a successful climb to the summit, whether you’re a beginner or expert!
Tips for climbing Kilimanjaro #1: Choose the right route
Mt. Kilimanjaro has several routes leading up to its summit. Which route to pick for your Kilimanjaro hike boils down to your hiking experience and comfort. There are several routes like the Rongai and Machame routes that are very well-frequented, easy to trek, and have plenty of time to acclimatise (7 days!), making them extremely beginner friendly. The Lemosho route, too, is a good choice for novice trekkers as it spans across 8 days but has a challenging stretch over the Shira Ridge. The Umbwe route, spanning across 6 days, is more difficult due to its shorter duration and trickier terrain, making it more suited for slightly more experienced trekkers.
Tips for climbing Kilimanjaro #2: Train your body
Going on runs is an excellent way to build stamina and put your muscles to work. If you prefer training for your Kilimanjaro hike indoors, stair masters and climbing machines at the gym will also work. Try not to go for short hard bursts of exercise but long sustained workouts instead. An adequate training regime is to maintain 80% of your max heart rate (220 minus your age) for an hour, three to four days a week.
Tips for climbing Kilimanjaro #3: Train your mind
Remember high altitude mountain climbing requires a strong mind, and it’s as important as a strong body. You may have to endure harsh weather conditions, long trekking days that may grow uncomfortable, and be disconnected from a lot of the daily comforts you’re used to. Try staying positive and keep reminding yourself that you’ve got this!
Tips for climbing Kilimanjaro #4: Go on practise hikes
Going on short hikes in your vicinity is one of the best ways to prepare for your Kilimanjaro hike. This trains you for climbing at an incline, carrying the weight of your day pack, adjusting to possibly uncomfortable situations like sleeping outdoors in tents, and helps in building your stamina.
Tips for climbing Kilimanjaro #5: Take it “pole, pole”
As your local guides and support staff will rightly put it, taking your hike “pole, pole” or “slowly, slowly” is the way to go. Pace yourself comfortably and do not rush the trek as it may wear you out too soon and render you unable to complete the trek.
Tips for climbing Kilimanjaro #6: Water is your best friend
As you gain altitude on your Kilimanjaro hike, the air will start getting drier and thinner, straining your body even further. Hydrating your worn-out body is the best thing you can do to stay fit, avoid headaches and altitude sickness, and fight fatigue. We recommend carrying 2 or 3 1-liter bottles that you can refill each night at the campsite to keep you hydrated throughout the day.
Tips for climbing Kilimanjaro #7: Follow proper acclimatisation procedures
Your guide is the best source for any tips while on the trek to avoid altitude sickness. If they recommend resting for a given amount of time or going at a certain pace, listen to them and follow their instructions. Going too fast, not acclimatising to higher altitudes, not sleeping, drinking, or eating well, all contribute to higher chances of suffering from altitude sickness.
Tips for climbing Kilimanjaro #8: Catch up on your sleep
Needless to say, rest is extremely important on your Kilimanjaro hike. You may find some difficulty in falling asleep for the first few nights as your body adjusts to new conditions and altitudes, but it is important to catch some shut eye to recharge your body for another day of intense trekking.
Tips for climbing Kilimanjaro #9: Pack winter clothing – but be aware of the sun
During your Kilimanjaro hike, you will cross five climatic zones, ranging from lush rainforests to cold deserts. Days can be sunny, while nights turn biting cold. Pack clothes that will protect you from the cold but are easy to layer and take off as and when needed, to adjust to your levels of comfort.
Tips for climbing Kilimanjaro #10: Carry the right gear
Though you don’t need any technical gear for your Kilimanjaro hike, we recommend carrying the basics – hiking boots, base layers, fleece hats and gloves, a fleece sweater, etc. Once you’ve joined one of our treks, you’ll receive a detailed packing list and rental gear list to help you prepare.
