Though often ignored in favour of its’ big sister Kilimanjaro, the Mount Meru trek is a worthy trekker’s paradise. This massive volcano towers over 3,000 meters above Arusha town, which lies at the foothills on its south side. The mountain endured an explosion in the distant past, and in its wake the explosion left towering cliffs in a gaping U-shaped ridge facing east towards Kilimanjaro, which offer excellent vistas as you climb Mt. Meru. The crater stands today in a protected amphitheatre of sorts, thousands of feet below the summit rocks. The craggy top lies at the westernmost point of the summit ridge and juts boldly into the sky at 4566 meters (14,980 feet). As you climb Mt. Meru, the views of Mt. Kilimanjaro are stunning.
What makes the Meru trek truly special is the chance to see animals on foot and explore the Meru Crater. This area is home to Cape buffalos, giraffes, elephants, waterbucks, bushbucks, dik diks, warthogs, olive baboons, abyssinians (black & white), Colobus monkeys, and Sykes monkeys. You may even find traces of leopards, civet cats, red duikers, and mountain duikers. There also is a huge diversity of birds whose cacophony can be heard throughout the Meru trek. An armed ranger joins each Meru trek, for safety. Trekking here can be done in the Meru Crater on a popular daytrip that we offer. But if you wish to climb Mt. Meru to its peak, it is usually done in a three-night / four-day itinerary, though it can be done more quickly if you’re more experienced. The minimum age to climb to climb Mt.
