Conquering the Barranco Wall: A Trekker’s Guide to Kilimanjaro’s Most Famous Climb

If you are researching what it is like to climb Mt Kilimanjaro, chances are you have come across stories about the Barranco Wall a.k.a “Breakfast wall”. This dramatic rock face is one of the most famous — and misunderstood — sections of the mountain. The wall is part of the sides that form the Barranco Valley. The Barranco wall looks intimidating from camp, but most trekkers are surprised by how enjoyable the climb actually is.

In this guide, we’ll explain what the Barranco Wall really is, why it’s not as scary as it looks, and how to prepare for one of the true highlights of the Kilimanjaro trek.

What Is the Barranco Wall on Kilimanjaro?

It is a steep ridge that rises about 257 me (843 feet) from the Barranco Valley. It’s often mistaken for a vertical cliff, but in reality it’s a scramble — a hands-and-feet climb that doesn’t require ropes, technical gear, or climbing experience.

Trekkers attempting the Machame Route or Umbwe or Lemosho Route typically face the Barranco Wall on Day 4, 3 or 5, after spending the night at Barranco Camp. Waking up to the towering wall above camp can feel daunting, but by the end of the climb, most of our clients call it one of their favorite parts of the journey.

Why the Barranco Wall Looks Scarier Than It Really Is

From below, the Barranco Wall appears sheer and impossible. But once you start the climb, you’ll see that the trail zigzags across natural shelves, handholds, and ledges. Guides carefully lead trekkers up the safest path, making sure everyone goes at a steady pace.

It’s less about strength and more about balance, patience, and trust. There is a great sense of achievement once you reach the top — with an outstanding view of Kibo with glaciers — makes the challenge worthwhile.

The Famous “Kissing Rock”

Perhaps the most iconic moment on the Barranco Wall is the “Kissing Rock” — a narrow ledge where trekkers hug the rock and shuffle across with a steep drop below. It sounds intimidating, but with a guide’s help and careful steps, most find it easier than expected. This is the spot that creates incredible memories and a few great photos!

Tips for Climbing the Barranco Wall Successfully

If you are preparing for Kilimanjaro, here are some essential tips for making the most of the Barranco Wall experience:

  1. Trust your guides – They’ve climbed it countless times and know the safest path.

  2. Use three points of contact – Keep two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand, on the rock for balance.

  3. Pack light for the climb – Carry only what you need in your day-pack; porters will handle the rest.

  4. Pace yourself – The motto “pole, pole” (slowly, slowly) applies here too.

  5. Don’t forget to look back – The views of the valley and camp below are breathtaking.
